GSM time…

Jan and I spent some time in the Great Smoky Mountains- to be more specific, just outside of Townsend, TN. We rented a cabin for the weekend and spent some time just relaxing, checking out some crafts & antique stores and cruising through Cades Cove. The cabin was located just off the “Little River” We didn’t have direct river access since we were on a bluff, but we could listen to the water rush by while kicking back on the porch.

One of our favorite things about the GSM is Cades Cove. It’s an 11-mile one-way loop that tours a historic settlement. One of the neatest things about Cades Cove is the wildlife. This trip we saw about 2 dozen turkey, half a dozen deer and a bear. I’m kicking myself for not having a tripod- I wasn’t able to get a clear shot of the bear- but you get the idea anyhow. The cove is now a free access National Park.

Cades Cove…

Cades Cove...

Yesterday Jan and I took Kay and Lenora to the Great Smoky Mountains near Gatlinburg, TN. We drove the 11-mile one way road through Cades Cove. If you’ve never been you ought to go take a look. While we were there we saw a momma black bear and her two cubs as well as six deer and a couple of turkey.

On the right you will see the workmanship of the John Oliver Cabin. Notice how half-dovetail notches were used with outward-sloping angles to drain water from the notch.

It’s been pretty quiet here at the home front since I got back from my trip to Nebraska. Jan has had a bad sinus infection, so we haven’t been out doing much- not to mention the fact that it’s been a bit rainy and chilly. So, I thought I would look back at what we did a year ago today.

This is a shot from a nature trail in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park near Gatlinburg, TN.  The area there is so rugged and beautiful.
