Teenagers…

Teenagers...

I blogged the other day about the young Green-Backed Herons we have at our lake. At the time I thought we had 3 of them. Today, I saw 5 of them at one time. They really kept me amused the whole time I was out fishing. They fought and played like a bunch of kids. One of them fell in the water and you would have sworn that he was being murdered- he was squawking like crazy. One of them got up from laying on a branch and he needed to stretch- it was the funniest thing. First he stretched out his neck and body… then he took his left wing and using his left foot- stood on his wing and stretched his back- he then used his right foot to do the same thing with the right wing. I had never seen anything quite like that before.

Offspring...
Back in May I posted the picture (below) of a Green-backed Heron. Well today I spotted his offspring- I was only able to get a photo of two, but there are at least 3 of them. I wonder if they will all stay at the lake?

Postponed Outing…

Postponed Outing...
05292009031Yesterday evening I thought I would head out to the lake for an hour or so of fishing before it got dark. Just as I was starting to head down the hill towards the boat I noticed these 3 Canada Geese hanging out on the dock! We’ve had geese out on the lake in the past- but they usually don’t stay very long, so… I thought I would take a break from fishing and let them have the evening to enjoy the lake. The Green-backed Heron was hanging around as well. I love how the trees are reflecting so much green off of the lake!

The rain has stopped enough so Jan and I were able to get out and mow the backyard. We’ve pretty much turned it into a “team sport”. Jan on the riding mower and me with my John Deere Green mower. Now, we need to get rid of all this Poison Ivy. I am currently experiencing my 2nd round of rash… I’m thinking I need to get Jan out there in a Hazmat suit with about 5 gallons of Round-up! That just might take care of the problem.

We have a pair that has been hanging out around the lake for quite some time.

It’s been raining here since Tuesday evening, and I’m personally a little tired of the gloom, but apparently the rain doesn’t bother this Great Egret. He showed up early this afternoon and we’re hoping he decides to stay awhile. 03282009 004

Feels like home…

Feels like home...
We’ve been seeing Ole Blue for brief moments, every now and then since he first arrived in early October. Today while I was out fishing, I got another good look at him. Apparently he has decided to make our lake his home… at least for the time being.

He’s Back….

“Ole Blue” was back this evening. I have no Idea if it’s a boy or a girl.. But for the sake of argument- lets just say it’s a boy… Anyway- he was hanging out in the trees along the lake tonight, watching me fish. I have a feeling he caught a lot more fish today than I did!!
