Cousin Jimmy

12042009 100_0690Cousin Jimmy came over today to see if he could figure out where the leak is coming from in our sunroom.  The only suspect spot we could find was a spot where the gutter screws into the the house. The screw hole was larger than the screw. So we caulked it and replaced the screw. Hopefully that does it! Thanks Cousin Jimmy!

Roofing II

11032009 001Just over a year ago we had a new roof put on the house due to a leak in the sunroom. Well- the other day we were sitting here listening to it rain when we heard a very distinct sound. Drip Drip Drip…. A leak in the sunroom again… The roofers came out to fix the problem. We hope!

And now the work is done…

The roof is finished. The guys did an awesome job. They started shingling around 1pm and were finished with the shingles by 5pm.

By 6pm, they finished the ridge line vent, sealing along the tin roof on the carport, and mounting the satellite dish (we still need DirecTV to realign it Sunday- so no TV til then) they cleaned up and were gone around 6:30pm. They really did a great job- they were able to repair the “flaws” in the original construction of the add-on and the roof looks great! 10102008 095

Let the work begin…

The roofers showed up this morning (on time, I might add) and started work on repairing our leaky sun room. We opted to have the whole roof re-shingled. We’re having 30 year architectural shingles installed. I think it will look pretty sharp when it’s finished. Within about an hour they nearly had half the shingles tore off the roof. By lunch time they were finished clearing the shingles, and had them piled quite nicely in the back of the dump truck.

It’s no wonder the roof was leaking- The company that built the add-on to the back house failed to do a few “important” things- Such as removing the existing shingles so they could properly “marry” the new roof to the existing roof. they also failed to make a mitered cut on the plywood butting up to the existing roof- They did place a piece of metal flashing on the joint- BUT, they failed to actually attach the metal to anything… Need I say more? At one point in the roof, there was literally enough room for me to stick my hand between the existing roof and the add-on roof! Shoddy workmanship all the way around if you ask me! I have no idea how the roof lasted as long as it did- and why we didn’t have leaks across the complete back of the house!

Time to dry out the sun room!

Time to dry out the sun room!Time to dry out the sun room!I’m seriously having doubts where home improvement services are concerned. We have spent the last several months trying to get one company or another out to the house to make repairs. And when they finally do make an appointment with us- they don’t show up. I’m really starting to wonder what the problem is. We live a good ways from Greenville- But we’re not out in the middle of the boonies or anything. We had an appointment for some roofers to come over early this morning to give us an estimate on a roof repair. They finally made it around 5pm.

Some time ago, Jan had 3 rooms added on to the back of the house- a sun room, bathroom and computer room. Well it seems they didn’t do a very good job roofing the add-on, and now we have a leak. We have no idea how long it has leaked- We travel a lot and hadn’t noticed any leaks until this summer- when we noticed some of the hardwood flooring is ruined. We now have half a dozen drip pans in the room. If it rains 1/2 inch outside- we end up with 4 inches inside. We got a pretty good estimate today, and will get a few more before we select our roofers. That is assuming we can actually get anyone else to come over…  (I know the photo of Jan really doesn’t have anything to do with the post- I just want to see those blue eyes..)
